Graphic Design is the use of ideas, words and images to create visual communication across a range of media. In so doing it responds to and generates a range of visual and cultural stimuli.

The University of Sunderland's top-up degree in Graphic Design has been specifically created to provide the next academic stage to students who already hold a relevant Higher National Diploma, Foundation Degree or Associate Degree.

With the emphasis very much on developing and refining students' portfolio and professionalism, the programme offers opportunities for developing both creative and technical graphic design skills.  Live studio projects will be used when appropriate and this will lead to rewarding employment in the design industry or postgraduate study. It is an intensive but enjoyable programme that will ensure that students can compete in the demanding world of commercial graphic design.

The programme consists of four modules:

  • Design Studio Practice - working in teams and individually to simulate the studio environment and working methods.
  • Dissertation/Design Research Project on a contextual topic relevant to your studio work.

The main criterion for entry is the student's ability to complete the course successfully and therefore each student will be required to attend an interview with their portfolio.

In addition, an appropriate level of English level is required.

All applicants will be interviewed
A creative portfolio is the most significant element for entry to this course.

Preparing Your Portfolio
The followings are some suggestions of what you may wish to include when preparing your portfolio:

  • Drawing: examples of observed drawing and expressive drawing.
  • Projects: evidence of project work in the area of creative problem solving and visual communication together with your roughs and developmental work.
  • Self-initiated work : that you have done out of personal interest.
  • Research: examples of various forms of investigation undertaken for projects.
  • Writing: examples of various kinds of writing, reports, essays or journals.

Generally your portfolio should be well organised, clean and tidy. Finished work should be simply mounted and accompanied by preparatory work. Sketchbooks are an important feature of your preparatory work and must be included. 3D work is easier to bring and show if photographed, although in some instances the actual 3D work may be brought if feasible. Digital and screen based work may be brought on CD or DVD. It may be best to save the work as a PDF file as this will allow it to be opened through Acrobat.

Supplemental Information

At interview you can expect to be seen for about twenty minutes by an interview panel up to three members. The purpose of the interview is the opportunity it provides for both students and SWP to find out about each other.

Interviewers will be interested in students' approach to work, awareness and understanding of design and the specialist subject for which students are applying, enthusiasms and interests, influences and experiences.

Interviewers will also like to know students' plans for the future and the research students have done to find a suitable study programme.

The interview is an opportunity for students to impress interviewer with students' aptitude, commitment and potential. The interview will conclude with the opportunity for student to ask questions.
